Fr. Tom's Thoughts
(From February 28th)

In today’s second reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians, Paul writes of those who are “enemies of the cross of Christ.” The Philippians would certainly know what an “enemy” was because they were retired veterans of the Roman military and the colony was founded after a military defeat in 42 B.C. Paul writes to these, his converts, asking them to imitate his example and not that of those who are trying to impose upon them Jewish practices! Paul states, “Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their ‘shame’.” Scholars believe that the second clause refers to circumcision but there are several explanations for the first. A popular interpretation refers the first clause to the Jewish dietary laws with it’s reference to the “stomach.” John Pilch of Georgetown, however, has another explanation. In The Cultural World of the Apostles; Year C, Pilch writes, “The Greek translation of the Bible (LXX) frequently uses this word (belly [or stomach]) to denote affections, the mind, the innermost heart, the person; in other words, self-esteem. This would suggest a better translation: ‘their god is self-esteem’.” Perhaps the Philippians are beginning to question their commitment to Christ, perhaps they are suffering at the hands of mockers and these men, proud veterans of the Roman military forces, are losing their self-esteem. Rather than being like Jesus who “emptied” and “humbled himself” (Philippians 2:7-8), these converts’ “minds are occupied with earthly things.” Paul invites them to imitate his example of faithful discipleship. In today’s Gospel of the transfiguration, the apostles experience Jesus’ glory as the Father’s Son and this will sustain them in the coming months through his passion and death. They too will imitate Jesus through suffering and even death. Like the Roman veterans, they will be called to empty and humble themselves in discipleship. In our Lenten journey, can we do the same or will the preservation of our self-esteem guide our lives?

Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening-- depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal.

Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat.

A Spring Retreat: March 20th

Many of you are probably wondering what this spring retreat you are starting to hear about is and why aren’t we just doing another Awakening. Last year, Student Council took into consideration concerns, voiced both by Rector Staff and other members, about Awakening and came to the conclusion that we should try something new this spring.

From these concerns, we have designed a brand new and completely different retreat that we are really excited about. The retreat will start early on Saturday, March 20th and will end early Sunday morning. We will be using the beautiful facilities at Holy Trinity. The basis of this retreat will be geared towards self reflection and finding God’s love in your own life. It will include a few short speeches as well as small group and personal reflection time. All are welcome on the retreat, no matter if you have been on Awakening or not. We will be doing signups for the retreat very soon, so be sure to be looking for them. In the meantime, if you have any further questions, I will be happy to answer them!

Christmas time is here!

The semester is winding down and life is so busy it’s often hard to think straight! Meanwhile, time marches on and signs of Christmas are everywhere. The problem is we are often far too busy to remember the true spirit of Christmas. It becomes a time of shopping and running around trying to tie up loose ends. We forget that Christmas should be a time to come together and grow in faith and love.

Often, the best memories of the season are the ones we make with our families. Even now that I am away and in college, each year I think of putting up the tree with my family. Most years, all five of us come together to decorate the tree. We usually have a warm fire in the fireplace and an Amy Grant CD playing. It’s moments like these that I truly cherish.

So as we journey through the Christmas season we need to slow down and take some time to just be together. Whether it’s carrying on old traditions or creating new ones, these are the things we will take with us all through our lives.

This is Danielle's Post-it published Sunday, Nov. 8th.

We just went on this really great retreat, what do we do now?

So many times we go on a great retreat, have excellent conversations with friends and beautiful moments with God.  However, then we get home and it seems to quickly unravel.  That new friendship we made only lasts a week or two.  The new devotion to a daily rosary may quickly become every other day, then slip to weekly, and soon, not at all.  While this does not happen to everyone, the sad truth is, most of us have experienced this in some way or another.

We have just invested the last three days of our lives to this amazing journey, and we have accomplished so much in this time.  Don’t we owe it to ourselves to make something valuable of our experience?  If we go back to our pre-Awakening lives, what was the point of ever having gone in the first place?  We must challenge ourselves to not let it end here.

One of the best parts about Awakening is that it never really ends.  Can we ever be fully “Awakened”?  It is an ongoing process that will be with us in every part of our lives from here on out.  The other really great part about Awakening is that we leave this retreat armed and ready!  Think about this.  We have just walked off of Awakening #59.  We had about 35 new participants involved.  Now do the math and figure out how many people we share this amazing Awakening bond with.  Bottom line, we are not alone.  We, as an Awakening community, are in it together every step of the way.  We should never feel like we have to make this difficult journey alone.  We are all working together to keep each other on this path we have started traveling this weekend.  CCM has so many opportunities, such as CLC, Adoration, and Catholicism 101, that can help us keep our fire burning.  Prayer groups and even weekly social calls are a great way to do this together.  When we surround ourselves with people that share similar values to our own, it is easier to hold on to those values.

As an Awakening community, we are challenged to continue to grow in our own faith, but most especially in the spirit of Awakening 59, GO OUT AND SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS!

(From October 25th)

I don’t know about you, but for me it’s that time of year where everything becomes chaotic and seems to catch up with me.  So I am going to share with you my top 10 favorite ways to de-stress myself!  J
