Provide a "Table of Plenty"
Thursday, February 27 marked the end of the first
annual campus-wide Table of Plenty food drive which began on Sunday, February
23. The goal was set to raise 3,000 pounds of food. Not only was this goal met,
it was more than doubled as the final tally reached over 6,802 pounds of food!
Twenty-six organizations in total participated including organizations from
Drury and SMS. Each organization was asked to commit to raising 100 pounds of
food. Many organizations not only met but exceeded this goal. Plaques were
rewarded to the organizations that raised the most food.

To help celebrate the success of Table of Plenty,
CCM reserved R.P. McMurphy’s for Thursday, February 27, from 9 p.m. until
closing. This was a private party reserved for Table of Plenty participants. The
official winners were announced at McMurphy’s and the first place award was
given to New Hall, 6 East. Members raised 556 pounds. Second place went to
Scholars house with a grand total of 390 pounds. Third place was awarded to the
LDS Institute of Religion members who raised 333 pounds.
This food drive benefited the Kitchen and could
not have come at a better time, as post holiday donations are quite low, which
leaves area food banks empty. The average person doesn’t realize how much
hunger persists. Here are a few startling statistics to illustrate this point.
In 2002, requests for emergency food assistance increased 19%. Of those
requests, 48% were families with children. Thirty-three million people in the
United States are experiencing hunger or are at risk for hunger, including
thirteen million children.
As a student council member, I am proud of the
work that this ministry has done to help aid those in need. This first annual
Table of Plenty will be one of many, and each year we must raise the bar,
constantly demanding more food. Since we have raised over 6,802 pounds this
first year, next year our goal will be even higher. I am confident that this
ministry will step up and meet that goal.
