The Claretian Martyrs

51 Claretians, mostly college-age seminarians, were martyred in Barbastro, Spain, during the Spanish Civil War and beatified by Pope John Paul II.  Numerous testimonies of the martyrs’ faith and courage were given by villagers who saw them go to their death forgiving their executioners. With joy they gave their lives for the glory of God and the missionary work of the Church. They were arrested, mistreated, threatened and finally executed without trial between August 2nd and 18th, 1936.

This mural is found in the Gathering Area
outside the
Chapel of the Claretian Martyrs
.

This painting, representing the 51
bullet holes is found above the
Baptismal Font in the Chapel.

These murals were painted during October
 and November of 2001
by Fr. Maximino Cerezo Barredo,
an international artist from Peru,
a member of the Claretian Missionaries.

The Bread Basket Tabernacle

The Eucharist constituted the center of their
lives and the strength for their martyrdom.
As long as they could they distributed the Eucharist, hidden from their jailors.
Sometimes they hid the consecrated host
in the breakfast bread

Spanish Style Stations of the Cross

These Stations are Spanish style
to honor these Claretian martyrs of Spain.
They are handmade of local clay in
Calisco, Mexico.
The numerals indicating the 14 meditations
on Jesus’ suffering and death
were painted by Fr. Cerezo.

Baptismal Pool

The Baptismal Pool is placed at the entrance of the Chapel to symbolize our entry into the Christian community. By taking the water and signing ourselves with the Sign of the Cross, we remind ourselves of our baptism in Christ each time we enter the Chapel. The running water symbolizes life in Christ. The three steps on either side of the inside of the font represent the three days Jesus spent in the tomb before rising again. They represent the going down into and coming out of the waters of Baptism—
a dying and rising with Christ.
