October 18, 2007 We're doing pretty well. Becoming a grown up is a strange process. The apartment is nice even with its outdated retro carpet but we finally have internet at home. I got wireless from my friend across the street. The job has picked up pace and I'm finally located at one mining/milling site so I'm adding lots of new events and people to work with. Life in the US is alright. I haven't tried to analyze it too much. My work is satisfying. I'm a trainer/facilitator for 5S, a lean workplace organization tool. It's cool to help people improve their work areas and give support to their ideas that they've had for years but were never given the opportunity to do so. I'm adjusting to working within a large organization with its political/management issues and all the people issues. That's been kind of a surprise that I wasn't anticipating. It's not so much adjusting to life in the US but life in general that's difficult in how the average person lives with money and time commitments and balancing all that. Peace Corps was rather comfortable in its predictability and time commitments. Here it's more of a juggling act but it's probably better than most considering life in a rural town is rather relaxed even though we have to make trips farther away to get certain products just like in Georgia. We sure are dependent on cars! Although I can walk to the supermarket, my parent's house, or really anywhere within my town of 800.. Lindsey is experiencing the "joys" of teaching 5 preps to students who aren't too interested in literature. I've been playing baseball in St. Louis with my brother Andy in competitive league for the past few weeks. I've played pretty well, pitched a few times, and will probably start my own league in Viburnum in the spring. We had our first music gig at a local festival this weekend. It went really well. We played for 3 hours! It was great having a full band with a bassist and drummer. This weekend we went to a Georgian dance concert (Sukushvili). They did the sword fighting but didn't throw the daggers into the dance floor. Bummer. But it was still cool. We stopped by the stage afterwards to talk to the Georgians but when I said something as they walked by they seemed surprised to be spoken to in Georgian and walked off in bewilderment. This weekend we're going to Herman, a German heritage town, for Oktoberfest. Prost! Hope you're well. LOVE! David and Lindsey
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- June 9, 2006 Dearest Friends & Family, Quick update: moved into a new apartment yesterday with electricity (what's that!), hot running water (even better), and our first home together since being married (best). It's on the fourth floor in a shady Soviet concrete block but inside it quite nice and clean and appears to have been never lived in. We'll send pics when it's semidecorated (it was empty before we came). But we're very happy to cook, be married, and have our own place. Work and school are going well and we await for spring to avoid the mix of rain and snow that results in guaranteed wet socks from walking through slush rivers. Love to hear any news from you from afar. LOVE! David & Lindsey (Click here for letter from David and Lindsey: Live From Georgia -- June 23, 2005) |
