"The sure sign that God is active in your life is that you will be led where you did not plan to go." St. John Baptist de La Salle

My faith underwent substantial development through my involvement with Catholic Campus Ministry. My closest friends in college would be from CCM. These friendships were most crucial to my faith formation as they encouraged me to become a better Catholic, a better Christian, a better human being. CCM also gave me a passion for volunteerism and made me question if what I was studying-business-was what I really wanted to do in my life even though I had wanted to study business since middle school. I wanted a career that had meaning to me.

After transferring to Oklahoma State University to finish my degree, I postponed one course-Investment Portfolio Management-to Spring 2004. At the same time, the Newman Center of University of Tulsa was sponsoring a Catholic Middle School, San Miguel, through a youth rally.  My professor for the course I postponed was on San Miguel's board of directors. Through my relationship in class with my professor and my relationship with the school principal, I decided to apply to the Lasallian Volunteers. In August 2004, I was assigned to De La Salle North Catholic High School in Portland, Oregon to help coordinate a work study program that helped culturally diverse students with economic need finance their private, Catholic, college Prep education.  It was a perfect fit, combining my personal passion and professional interests.

After two years of volunteering, I applied to the same position at Cristo Rey Kansas City High School, but stayed on as an employee at De La Salle for the next two school years.  I kept in touch with Sr. Vickie Perkins, SCL, the President of Cristo Rey Kansas City throughout that time.  Homesickness prevailed and when Sr. Vickie called me in January to offer me a position, I accepted and began in March.

Throughout those two years, when I talked to Carrie (Zemblidge) Bajzath, a fellow CCM alum and Life Teen music minister in St. Louis, she would tell me I needed to look up Kris Walters and volunteer for his Life Teen ministry.

After a few weeks after my arrival to Kansas City, I emailed Kris.  The next week we went to lunch and found out that Kris a CCM alum from 1994.  I have volunteered for Kris' youth ministry as a member of the Core Team since May.  My life also intersected with Fr. Matt Link, a CCM alum from 1986, when he began teaching theology at Cristo Rey in August.  Fr. Matt is a former Claretian and now a Precious Blood Priest.  CCM laid the foundation for my ministry and I am truly doing something I did not plan to do, but I feel designed for the work I am doing.  It is amazing to me that I am working with CCMers from a decade and two decades earlier and we immediate connect because of that common thread.

We're doing pretty well. Becoming a grown up is a strange process.  The apartment is nice even with its outdated retro carpet but we finally have internet at home. I got wireless from my friend across the street.

The job has picked up pace and I'm finally located at one mining/milling site so I'm adding lots of new events and people to work with. Life in the US is alright. I haven't tried to analyze it too much. My work is satisfying. I'm a trainer/facilitator for 5S, a lean workplace organization tool. It's cool to help people improve their work areas and give support to their ideas that they've had for years but were never given the opportunity to do so. I'm adjusting to working within a large organization with its political/management issues and all the people issues. That's been kind of a surprise that I wasn't anticipating. It's not so much adjusting to life in the US but life in general that's difficult in how the average person lives with money and time commitments and balancing all that.

Peace Corps was rather comfortable in its predictability and time commitments. Here it's more of a juggling act but it's probably better than most considering life in a rural town is rather relaxed even though we have to make trips farther away to get certain products just like in Georgia. We sure are dependent on cars! Although I can walk to the supermarket, my parent's house, or really anywhere within my town of 800..

Lindsey is experiencing the "joys" of teaching 5 preps to students who aren't too interested in literature.

I've been playing baseball in St. Louis with my brother Andy in competitive league for the past few weeks. I've played pretty well, pitched a few times, and will probably start my own league in Viburnum in the spring.

We had our first music gig at a local festival this weekend. It went really well. We played for 3 hours! It was great having a full band with a bassist and drummer.

This weekend we went to a Georgian dance concert (Sukushvili). They did the sword fighting but didn't throw the daggers into the dance floor.

Bummer. But it was still cool. We stopped by the stage afterwards to talk to the Georgians but when I said something as they walked by they seemed surprised to be spoken to in Georgian and walked off in bewilderment.

This weekend we're going to Herman, a German heritage town, for Oktoberfest. Prost!

Hope you're well.

LOVE! David and Lindsey

Dearest Friends & Family,

Quick update: moved into a new apartment yesterday with electricity (what's that!), hot running water (even better), and our first home together since being married (best).  It's on the fourth floor in a shady Soviet concrete block but inside it quite nice and clean and appears to have been never lived in. We'll send pics when it's semidecorated (it was empty before we came). But we're very happy to cook, be married, and have our own place.

Work and school are going well and we await for spring to avoid the mix of rain and snow that results in guaranteed wet socks from walking through slush rivers.

Love to hear any news from you from afar.

LOVE! David & Lindsey                                                              (Click here for letter from David and Lindsey:  Live From Georgia  --  June 23, 2005)

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!

We're back from a 19 day thrill ride through Egypt sandwiched with day long layovers in Istanbul. While not exactly a relaxing vacation due to the infamous Egyptian harassment (since Egypt is the original tourist destination they've been harassing for over 2000 years and are quite good at it) there were moments and days of pure bliss due to trekking off the tourist path and finding untouched oases, hot springs, and deserts full of palm date trees and olives. Although the man made structures were awe inspiring the natural beauty and diversity of the deserts, mountains, oases, and underwater life will be the memories that last.

Hope everyone is happy and healthy and hope to catch soon.

LOVE! David & Lindsey
