SLU@CCM

Catholic Campus Ministry has partnered with Saint Louis University in a pilot program to offer courses in Catholic Studies in-person at CCM through the College of Philosophy and Letters at SLU. To make these courses available to as many students as possible, SLU discounted their tuition rate to $225 per credit hour and created a streamlined registration process, waiving the normal transcript requirement. For the Spring 2025 semester, thanks to a generous donor, all tuition fees are now covered for any student that enrolls!

Spring 2025 Course Description

Readings in the Summa Theologiae

A one credit reading course

The written corpus of St. Thomas Aquinas, who is honored with titles such as the Common Doctor and Angelic Doctor, has been recognized by the Catholic Church as a unique source of clearly imparted and faithful teaching on a vast array of topics. In the Second Vatican Council document on Christian education, Aquinas is lifted up as the preeminent example for university students and faculty to follow in terms of how to approach scientific inquiry. Before that, Pope Leo XII decreed in Aeterni Patris that teachers at Catholic universities “endeavor to implant the doctrine of Thomas Aquinas in the minds of students.” This course will serve to introduce students to Aquinas through selected readings from his most famous work, the Summa Theologiae. Topics covered may include the persons of the Trinity, the Incarnation, sacraments, and final things (resurrection, judgment, heaven, purgatory, and hell). At completion, students should have greater understanding of each topic covered and should be equipped to use the Summa for continued spiritual and intellectual formation.

What students are saying

The SLU@CCM course offered by Dr. Mercer provided an opportunity to openly discuss Catholic teaching and how it relates to current issues, which prompted reflection and deeper analysis of our beliefs. The group setting allowed for support and constructive conversation, as well as encouragement to dive deeper and ask honest, vulnerable questions. Dr. Mercer created a constructive, respectful, stress-free environment that I encourage everyone to take advantage of in future courses offered!  -Bella H

The SLU class that Dr. Mercer facilitated at CCM was incredibly insightful and helped provide a deeper understanding of the Catholic faith. Most of which I don't think I ever would have learned about if I didn't attend the class. It also served as an amazing source of thought-provoking conversations, friendly debates, and exposure to inventive/new concepts. I will absolutely be taking more of these classes in the future.  -Kevin R

I absolutely loved the SLU@CCM course that I took. Dr. Mercer is an incredible teacher and facilitates lively conversations based on the interests of his students. Every class had me asking questions I’d never even thought about before. The true community that Dr. Mercer builds in a classroom is not something you can find anywhere else.  -Caroline E

The SLU@CCM program has been amazing! I love having a class truly dedicated to learning about theology, philosophy, and truths about the faith! It truly is a class that has made me feel more educated and well versed in a multitude of ways!  -Javier W.R.
